About the Instructor

Bonita Shields is the General Vice President for Church Ministries in the North American Division. She has served as the NAD Stewardship Director, a local church pastor, assistant editor of the Adventist Review and Adventist World magazines, assistant director of discipleship in the Sabbath School and Personal Ministries Department of the General Conference, and as an editor of several Sabbath School publications. Most recently, she served as Associate Director of NAD Stewardship Ministries.

Pastor Shields brings with her experience in speaking and training in local churches, camp meetings, women's retreats, and in the world field. Her unique perspective on stewardship will be very helpful in developing practical skills for daily living. She received her undergraduate degree in theology from Columbia Union College (now known as Washington Adventist University) and her master's in pastoral ministry from Andrews University. She has completed the NAD Stewardship Certification program and the Dave Ramsey Financial Coach Master Training.

She enjoys reading, writing, and taking walks with her husband Roy of 35 years. She plays racquetball (when she can find a court and a willing partner), creates culinary "experiments," and, along with her sanguine husband, enjoys opening up their home to family and friends to celebrate life together.

John Mathews, retired North American Division Stewardship Director, is an ordained minister, who, as a boy, dreamed of becoming a country music singer. His ministry has included serving in Florida, Alabama, Iowa, Missouri, Tennessee, and Nebraska. He has conducted stewardship and family finance seminars throughout the North American Division since 2010.

Pastor Mathews is a graduate of Southern Adventist University and holds a Doctor of Ministry degree from Andrews University. He is the principle author of the First Quarter 2018 Adult Bible Study Guide, Live Stewardship...Live Happy, and co-authored with his wife, Janice, Smoky Mountain Rescue. He is also a musician, having recorded the gospel CD Keeper of My Heart.

Pastor Mathews maintains the following certifications: North American Division Stewardship Certification, Certified Stewardship Professional (CSP) from Christian Leadership Alliance, North American Division Planned Giving and Trust Service Certification, and Certified Specialist in Planned Giving (CSPG) from California State University.

His passion is teaching stewardship principles, especially as they relate to the spirituality of money management in postmodern culture. Pastor Mathews is married to Janice Schram Mathews, MSN, a nurse practitioner. They have one married daughter, Angela, and are proud grandparents. He enjoys hiking, running, playing the guitar, singing country gospel concerts, and sleeping late in the morning.
