One Room School and Remote Teaching

Course Summary

One-room school teaching is a high calling but doing it remotely brings in all sorts of unique challenges. This course will help you remotely manage instructional resources, schedule time with all students, engage older students with helping younger students, and integrate families with projects and activities.

I attended a wonderful one-room school for most of my elementary experience.  My teachers were rock stars! One-room school teaching is a high calling with amazing teachers doing the impossible every day. Emily Graham is one of those incredible one-room school teachers who continued to succeed even when school had to be taught remotely.

For this course, she has shared some of her great wisdom and methods to help you continue your classroom success from home.

What do I need to know?

After completing this training course, you will earn 0.1 CEUs and a certificate of completion in your Adventist Learning Community e-portfolio.

What will I learn in this course?

By the end of this course, a one room schoolteacher will be able to remotely:

  • manage instructional resources.
  • schedule time with all students.
  • engage older students with helping younger students.
  • integrate families with projects and/or activities.

About the Instructor

Emily Graham, like many of you, made it through remote education last Spring on a steep learning curve, but enjoyed trying new things and connecting with educators around the world in new ways. This was her 11th year teaching in Adventist schools and her 5th year teaching in a one-room school. She is currently pursuing a Master's in Reading Science while teaching in a little red one-room schoolhouse in Grayling, Michigan. With her husband, Mitch, she has enjoyed taking a break from screen-time this summer by hiking, biking, and kayaking.

Desmond Suarez II has been teaching Bible, History, and Computer classes from campus to campus via video conferencing at Richmond Academy since 2012. He is also currently working on his masters in Instructional Systems and Learning Technologies from Florida State University online. You can find more of his work at his website Signify.one.
