Community Health, Diseases

Course Summary

This Community Health course is one of three courses focused on Community Health. This 12-module course focuses on common and transmittable diseases. This course will help you explore numerous diseases, and provides practical disease recognition criteria, disease transmission and prevention guidelines, and health education information. It can also be taught as a community health seminar, as part of an evangelism project, during a health expo, in small groups, and in other venues.

What do I need to know?

After completing this course, you will earn 1 CEU and a certificate of completion in your Adventist Learning Community e-portfolio.

What will I learn in this course?

You will learn how to apply healthy living guidelines in both rural and urban communities that may not have access to quality medical care. This course is not a portion of a health care practitioner license. It does not give you the right to diagnose, prescribe, or oversee medical treatment, of any kind. If you or someone you know is experiencing a chronic medical condition please contact a family physician. If you or someone you know is experiencing a medical emergency, call 911 or activate your local emergency response system.

About the Instructor

Dr. Peter Landless is the Executive Director of the International Commission for the Prevention of Alcoholism and Drug Dependency (ICPA) and Director of the General Conference Health Ministries Department. He is originally from South Africa, where he was in academic and private practice as a clinical cardiologist with a special interest in nuclear cardiology. He was also actively involved in pastoral work and is an ordained minister of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The first eleven years of practice were spent in a mission program, which included obtaining a specialty in family medicine. During this time, two congregations were planted and church buildings completed. While specializing in internal medicine and cardiology, he was the associate pastor/pastor of a local congregation. He is privileged to have had a distinguished military and academic career, and a blessed, blended ministry involvement in the Lord's vineyard.
